| Story: Takela arrived with her ~2 month old colt (Carson) from a Nevada feedlot on June 21, 2009. Takela and her colt were very underweight and in poor health upon arrival. Takela’s hooves were extremely long with vertical splitting. One front toe had chipped and folded under her hoof.
Trainer Notes: Takela is halter trained; however, she is very distrusting in humans and difficult to approach, touch, or handle. She is a big, beautiful mare, but early in her residence at the rescue, she has acted with aggressive tendencies when faced with pressure situations. She is very food-motivated and will approach willingly for food;however, will not hang around for attention if there’s no food. A lead can be attached to her halter while eating, if slow and patient in approach. Takela has received numerous round pen sessions by a Parelli trainer and will yield her hindquarter & face the handler, and will circle both directions easily. She is very food motivated and will readily take treats from your hand, but can be hesitant to catch and requires alot of approach and retreat. Once on the lead Takela follows readily and is slowly learning the groundwork basics. She will back from nose pressure and is learning to yield the forequarter & hind. She is very sensitive to new things, and will require considerable patience and confidence building. Health: Good. Issues: Takela bit and kicked at an AAE member and farrier the first month or so she was here. However, with extensive one-on-one interaction, she has not since shown aggression. She will need a very experienced and extremely patient person willing to commit to daily handling to develop a trusting relationship with this big gal. Adoption Fee: $300. Takela’s hooves were trimmed with sedation, and she is due for dental treatment in January 2010. She will be vet checked and up to date with vaccines, deworming, dental and hoof care.
