Story: Takela arrived with her ~2 month old colt (Carson) from a Nevada feedlot on June 21, 2009. Takela and her colt were very underweight and in poor health upon arrival. Takela’s hooves were extremely long with vertical splitting. One front toe had chipped and folded under her hoof.

Trainer Notes: Takela is halter trained; She was very distrusting in humans and difficult to approach, touch, or handle when she arrived.  This big, beautiful mare has come a long way!  Early in her residence at the rescue, she acted with aggressive tendencies when faced with pressure situations.  Now, although still not completely trusting of humans, she approaches you from the field, curious about your presence, and loves a little scratch to her forehead.  She’s been very food-motivated and willing to approach for food; and now she’s also interested in companionship.  She allows and enjoys touching with a slow, patient approach.  She also enjoys a nice calm body rub.

She willingly loads into a trailer, and stands for hoof trimming.  She is very sensitive to new things, and will require a very special person willing to be patient and allow her confidence to grow.  She’s a very nice mare.

Takela has been near the bottom of the pecking order with the rescue herd and tends to be a loner, so she may need a friendly companion or space of her own.  She NEEDS her own person to spend tons of time with.

One of our youth trainers worked with Takela’s groundwork, socializing, and exposing her to new things like bareback pads, a saddle, and bridle.  She’s moving forward nicely.

UPDATE October 2011: Takela is currently being fostered to continue her training. Takela was started under saddle by her foster in September 2011. Takela is still shy and cautious, and she needs a patient and kind, but confident partner who will spend plenty of time with her to help continue developing her trust. Besides that, Takela remains curious about new things and people, and she’s a willing partner. She loves to have her forehead scratched, and she enjoys a good brushing! She is a very stunning mare. With a gentle, patient owner, there is no doubt that Takela will be able to develop a trusting relationship. She will be a winner!!

Health: Good.

Issues: Takela will need an extremely patient and gentle, but confident handler willing to commit to regular and consistent handling to continue developing a trusting relationship with this big gal.  She will be a winner!!

Adoption Fee:  $550.  On regular vaccines, worming, and hoof care schedule.
