Story: Sierra arrived with her ~2 month old colt (Dayton) and ~2 month old adopted orphan colt (Clayton). from the Nevada feedlot on July 10, 2009. Sierra and her boys were emaciated and completely depleted upon arrival. Her hooves were extremely long and she was very tender footed. She was not halter broke and had likely never had her hooves trimmed. Turns out, Sierra had large abscesses in both front hooves. In September, Sierra miscarried an approximate 4-1/2 month old foal (colt). At this point, Sierra will require an advanced handler.Trainer Notes: Sierra is a very pretty big bay mare, approx. 15.3 hands, and is currently in rehab to regain weight and nurse her two foals! This is an amazing mare who willingly adopted a young orphan colt that approached her to nurse at the feedlot after separation from his Dam. Since she is nursing two colts, her weight gain is a bit slower than the other mares with only one nursing foal. Sierra has some serious trust issues around her head and neck, and we suspect she has been abused because she is highly reactive and fearful to any touch around her upper neck and head. She will rear to keep her head and neck out of reach, and we are working with her to accept touch and follow on lead. After only a few round pen sessions, Sierra will now lead in a straight line for 20-30 feet, circles both directions and yields her hindquarter to the left and right. She accepts scratches from the handy stick on her shoulder, back and hindquarter, and we are progressing to the lower neck and under the neck as she displays confidence and trust. Sierra will accept pets and grooming along her sides, and is making steady progress in her understanding and acceptance of people and handling.Health: Recovering from very large abscesses in both front hooves. Sierra will receive full dental treatment in January 2010. Her hooves have not yet fully healed from the abscesses, but are improving slowly.

Issues: Sierra is extremely shy around her face and difficult to halter/remove halter. With work, she is improving, but will need a very gentle and patient, experienced handler.
Adoption Fee: TBD when fully rehabilitated and ready for adoption
