Story: Fillus arrived from the Nevada feedlot on September 29, 2009.  She was in very poor condition, extremely emaciated, and very nervous. She has settled in at the rescue and is progressing well, but she is not an easy keeper.

Early in her life, Fillus was a successful racehorse, winning about half a dozen races before her job as a broodmare. Later, she became a trail horse, until her mom and dad lost their jobs and could no longer feed her.  Fillus was also involved in a trailer accident, surviving a roll over a cliff.  This poor girl’s been through it all, but she has maintained a sweet, kind temperment.

Trainer Notes: Fillus is a very nice mare and well trained to ride! She neck reins, direct reins and has very smooth gaits. She loves the be groomed, easy to catch, moves off leg pressure and knows basic lateral work. Fillus has pretty movement, appears sound w/t/c, no obvious leg injuries from her race career. Good ground manners and could be suitable as a lesson horse, trail horse and pretty enough for 4H shows; however, she is high energy and will need work with an experienced rider. She also bonds tightly with another horse she’s housed with, and will need a home wiht another horse where they will be together at all times, while riding or at rest.  She will be ridden on trail once she has gained more weight.

Health: Fillus has a small rectal-vaginal tear, likely from foaling during her broodmare years.  The tear has healed to a small dime-sized hole near the rectal/vaginal opening.  AAE’s vet attempted to repair the hole, but the location made suturing difficult, and unfortunately, the repair did not hold.  However, after a round of antibiotics and repair attempts, the tear does not appear to impact her.  Fillus could still use some weight, but she has a good appetite and energy level, excellent coat condition, bright eyes, and nice hooves.  She is missing several teeth and requires a senior pellet diet .  She is not an easy keeper, but she’s worth every effort!

Issues: This mare will pace and weave if kept alone or in a stall or small enclosure. She does well in pasture with other horses, and usually bonds strongly to one or two other horses.  Once bonded, she gets separation anxiety when she and her companion are separated.
