Story: Miss Molly was rescued from a boarding facility in Oroville, CA. Miss Molly was one of number of horses given to the owner of the boarding facility. The owner decided she could no longer care for the horses and planned on moving out of state. The owner decided to shut down the boarding facility, and determined the best solution for getting rid of the last of the horses was to load them into a trailer a few at a time, have their nine-year old son shoot them, then haul them off for disposal.Jessie heard about Molly’s circumstances while looking for a horse for some neighboring grandkids when a friend told her of these five horses that were left in a pasture that were going to be killed. A friend was going to get two of them, and neighbors were on board when told about Molly’s circumstances. Miss Molly was trailered down with the other two horses, and sadly the two geldings that were left behind were shot the next week.Miss Molly was severely malnourished, and she was a nervous wreck when she arrived. There was also concern she was pregnant, and the neighbors backed out. There was NO way Jessie would return her to Oroville and the other end of a gun. Jessie pleaded her case to her grandparents, and they agreed to help with costs for Miss Molly’s rehabilitation for three months to get her back to a healthy weight, then find her a permanent home. You could see every one of Miss Molly’s bones protrude from her skin; she had no hair over her topline; and her skin was dry and flaky. Her hooves were very neglected. Dr. Hookstra was called out to evaluate whether Miss Molly would survive the effort. Palpation determined she was NOT pregnant. He said her heart, lungs, and teeth were healthy and in perfect working order, thank goodness. With a steady diet of grass hay, stable mix, ultramate, forco, and corn oil, Miss Molly has regained substantial weight, and Jess has done a fabulous job in rehabilitating this sweet mare. When she was feeling good, she started exercising with a lunging program. She did very well on the lunge line, and Jess started riding her soon after. She worked best in a bosal, but now works well in a shanked snaffle. Jess has exposed her to many things in a thorough attempt to find something that might spook Miss Molly, but so far has found nothing. She’s been lunged with a plastic grocery bag under the saddle, side of the saddle, and under her face tied to the halter with no reaction. She’s had ropes thrown on and off of her, she’s been ridden with flags, she’s had beanie babies thrown over and under her, played soccer around her and kicked the ball under her and thrown it over her, and hit her with it. No response. She’s fine with cars and roads, she goes in water, loves trail rides, she’s had a bird fly out from underneath her while being ridden, and no reaction. She ties, clips, and bathes. She loads and backs out of trailers. She loves children and just needs a little one of her own to come and spoil her everyday. She bonds strongly to her person! She is currently barefoot, and it was worked under conditions she’s been exposed to thus far. She will need her hooves trimmed, and they are a work in progress based on the condition they were in when she arrived. Miss Molly is an amazing mare, and she needs her forever home. Issues: Minor arthritis; best suited for light riding at this time, but may improve as her conditioning continues to improve. Adoption fee: $TBD, looking to help defray a small portion of the costs incurred rescuing and rehabilitating Miss Molly. For more pics of Miss Molly, click here
