Story: Montana is a BLM documented Mustang that was caputured in a 2001 roundup.  He was adopted along with a few other mares.  His owner planned on training him as a riding horse for himself, and he moved through his groundwork and got 4 to 5 rides in before becoming chronically ill.  For several years, he was hopeful that he’d be able to pick up his training and complete it, but unfortunately, years passed, and he was unable to do any more.  Realizing Montana a loving home where he’d get the attention and training he deserved, his owner contacted AAE.  Although Montana was a big, beautiful gelding, we were the years with little human interaction left him very shy and uninterested in human contact.  We were hesitant to take him in because we already had numerous unhandled mares from the feedlot and horses with limited handling and groundwork.  After numerous conversations, we finally agreed to bring Montana into AAE’s program.Montana is a stunning, attractive horse, and his hunkiness is complemented by most visitors to the rescue.

Trainer Notes:  What a pleasure he has been!  Jacob, one of our youth volunteers chose Montana as his horse for his high school project.  Under the mentorship of Phyllis and Joan, Jacob has refreshed and retaught Montana’s groundwork, and he was re-started under saddle in early December! He has a confident disposition and sound mind.  He takes everything in stride, and he’s thinking all the time.  He has beautiful, sure-footed movement.

Earlier this spring, Montana’s training was continued with a solid 30-days (over about a 60-day period) of saddle training by a trainer in the Alturas area.  He was slow in building trust, but his saddlework was good.  He was ridden in the mountains, over hills, under trees, through gates, through rivers, and at times, while woring cattle. With patience, consistency, and continued work, he’s going to make someone a very nice riding horse.  His riding has been continued by another of our youth volunteers.  July 31, 2011 update.
