Story: Moss was relinquished to AAE on May 7, 2011. Moss’ is a super sweet, people-loving boy, and his owner was no longer able to give him the attention he deserved. He’s very mild mannered and loves attention. Although his prior owner had raised him and trained him, Moss lived on a large green pasture and foundered in early 2010. As a result,he will need a special diet, special hoof care, and limited to no pasture.
Upon arrival, Moss’ hooves were very long in toe, and he was tender footed at times. However, in time, when introduced to some of AAE horses, he moved out and showed no signs of lameness. Radiographs of all four hooves and evaluation by Dr Stolba/Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center showed slight rotation of the front Coffin bones, but rear hooves appeared nearly normal. Dr. Stolba feels that with proper hoof care, tactical trimming to guide future hoof growth, and use of shoes, Moss should be suitable for light riding.
October 2011Update: Moss’ hooves are in good form, and he seems to be responding well.
Training Notes: Moss was trained as a Western riding horse. He seems to be a very nice, quiet, and very gentle guy. Under saddle, he is quiet, mellow, and willing, just a little rusty, but improves consistently with every ride.
October 2011 Update: Moss is doing well under saddle with Cavallo boots. He was little rusty, but makes steady progress with each riding session. He is a quiet, willing partner that remembers everything from one ride to the next. From limited evaluations under saddle, we believe he has had reining and/or cow horse training in his past. He is turning out to be a solid western riding horse, and we are very excited to see how he progresses. However, we have not had the chance to evaluate the amount of work he can withstand, so we are still unsure of the possibility of him performing at an intense level. He is on the lazy side, but responds well to the riders’ cues. He has not been evaluated on trail yet. He has great ground manners and is well behaved for the vet, farrier, dentist and ties, ground ties, bathes, trailers, etc. Any level rider would be well suited on him. Moss requires a special diet of Grass Hay only and limited supplements, with no pasture grass. As a riding horse he is a tender footed on hard ground and will require either front shoes or riding boots (we have used Cavello Boots).
Issues: Moss foundered in the past; he will need special diet (no pasture or very limited) and appropriate hoof care, likely including front shoes. Radiographs were taken on all four hooves; front hooves showed minor rotation with angles potentially correctible with proper trimming.
Adoption Fee: $950. Moss has been on regular vaccine, worming and hoof care schedules, and he had dental in October 2011. For more pics of Moss, click here.
