Story: Rye was relinquished to AAE in September of 2010 by an owner that could no longer provide for his care. He had been rescued from a bad situation the previous year. Rye is an ex-racehorse, and he was used for jumping and trails. We were told he had tender soles, and at the time he was initially rescued, he was barely in shoes on three hooves, and the fourth shoe was missing. A few days after arrival, Rye turned up lame. His trim was unbalanced, and his hooves were very short and in poor shape. He was trimmed as quickly as possible by our farrier, Paul Kezis. Rye’s hooves and lameness have been a work in progress, with great improvement over time.
Trainer Notes: Rye has a lovely personality. He’s a curious, interested, and gentle boy; however, he has some separation anxiety issues when removed from the herd. He gets nervous and “dances” around, continually moving his feet, and tosses his head. In time, he settles in. As such, he would do best with a patient, but confident handler willing to work to correct this issue. He appears to be a wonderful riding horse in the arena. Due to his hoof issues, we’ve only had limited opportunity to ride him, but so far, so good. He’s gorgeous under saddle, and seems to be a very willing partner. He loves attention, and seems to love a job. Regardless of his ridability, Rye will make someone a wonderful companion, but will likely need a pasturemate for company/confidence. He’s showing ongoing progress, and his lameness has resolved, but he will need shoes on front hooves. October 2011 Update: Under saddle, Rye has a very soft mouth, and he is responsive to all of the rider’s cues. He is suitable for novice or higher level rider in the arena, but has not been evaluated on trail yet. Rye is comfortable in an english or western saddle, and he goes very nicely in a smooth snaffle bit. He can live in pasture or a stall, but requires shoes, at least on his front feet. Health: Good, except his hooves are less than good. He will likely be most suitable for light riding, and he will need ongoing hoof care/shoes. He also has an overjet that is in the process of correction, and he will need 3-4 power floats per year, at least in the short-term. Issues: As described above, Rye has less than good hooves, but with shoes, he’s doing very well. Adoption Fee: $750. On regular vaccine, worming, and hoof care schedules. Dental care was provided by Melissa Shurr, CEqDT. He has an overjet that is in the process of correction, and he will need 3-4 power floats per year in the short-term, at least.
