| Story: Zuni arrived with her ~2 month old filly (Fallon) from the Nevada feedlot on June 21, 2009. Zuni was underweight and pregnant. Zuni gave birth to her new filly, Zia, on April 3, 2010.
Trainer Notes: This cute little 14 hand appaloosa or POA mare is in saddle training at Terris Oak Ranch. Prior to current training, she was ridden around the fenced rescue property, in the round pen and around the fenced rescue property. She was also ridden around the pastures of A Ranch of Light. She seems to have a very agreeable and confident disposition, willingly crossing a small stream of water, walking over variable surfaces like concrete and gravel, and was easy to ride away from the herd and her unweaned filly. She was calm and sensible during a Fox 40 interview, allowing the reporter to sit on her and film the news clip from her back! Zuni is an absolute sweetheart that enjoys people. She meets you at the gate. She’s easy to catch, and likes to be groomed. This little mare has been a great mother to her fillies, and although still very green to riding, she’s fairly uncomplicated and a bit on the lazy side. She direct reins, and we are working on getting lighter stops, more give to rein pressure and introducing neck reining and lateral work. At present she does not seem to understand leg pressure other than a basic “go forward” squeeze, and tends to lean on the bit or bosal. During feeding time, Zuni can be a typical mare: somewhat demanding, nipping at a couple people in pursuit of food. She received correction and submitted calmly. With additional training this mare will make a nice youth and 4H horse, but at present will require an Intermediate or Experienced rider since she is fairly novice in basic reining, saddling and groundwork, and is a little jumpy with fast movement around her head and neck. When startled she recovers quickly and usually only jumps in place or raises her head. With her level of confidence and her nice compact build, this mare appears suitable for just about any trail riding discipline, and would probably make a nice pleasure or team penning horse with additional training. Zuni has very good feet and legs and an agreeable nature.
Health: Good.
