Rosie's Story

Rosie came to AAE with five other horses in June of 2025. A Nevada law enforcement agency contacted AAE in May 2025 about a group of six horses that may need placement. They were waiting for a judge's decision. Originally, a group of eight horses was seized by law enforcement due to neglect, and two of the horses were in such poor condition that they were euthanized. Eventually, the court's decision resulted in a transfer of ownership to the law enforcement agency. While awaiting the court's decision, the horses were housed and cared for at the Nevada Department of Corrections. While in their care, the horses were well fed, and we were told they gained weight and looked much better than when initially seized nearly three months prior.

When we met Rosie, she was sweet, timid, and alone in her own paddock surrounded by big horses. Her stallion friend was in a paddock at the other side of the paddock area. She was stressy and untrusting! She was haltered with a bit of patience, and she was hesitant to load onto the trailer, but with a little encouragement, she loaded behind Huck. After settling in at AAE for a few days, Rosie warmed up, and she's was on her way to becoming a pocket pony with bad manners, as she had no concept of personal space. Her body condition was fairly good, but we were told the horses were living in a herd environment, so there was a good chance she's pregnant. Rosie's hooves were quite long and needing a trim, but he didn't seem to have much hoof handling.

In the short time she's been at AAE, Rosie's confidence is growing. She meets you in her paddock with a little caution, and with a slow approach, she welcomes attention. She is very sweet and cautiously wants interaction. Once she's done with quarantine, she'll have her much-needed spa day (dental and hoof care, vaccines, deworming, and a microchip). We'll consider pregnancy testing, too. Once she's caught up with her basic needs, she'll continue with further evaluation before becoming available for adoption. Stay tuned for more updates.

Update:  Rosie had her spa day with a dental, vaccines, and deworming. Her hooves have been trimmed, and she's becoming more confident with the farrier. Her blood test was negative for pregnancy.

Rosie is current with her dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming, and she has a microchip. Rosie is looking for an adopted with time and patience to grow her confidence. She's a sweet little mare, and she's enjoying interaction and grooming.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE, including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, and weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, cows, a mini donkey, a mini mule, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife, including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyotes, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high-speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a quieter environment.
