Sparkie is a 20+ QH mare that came to AAE in July 2017 thanks to caring neighbors that encouraged her owner to provide better care or relinquish her. Owner didn't have time for her and opted to relinquish to AAE. What's left of her upper front teeth had been worn down to the gums, and few remaining teeth were in much need of dental treatment. Initial bloodwork indicated an internal infection; she was started on antibiotics, and she was monitored for additional needs.
She was on a gradual refeeding program consistent with UC Davis' guide for refeeding malnourished horses. Once stabilized, her teeth (or what was left of them) got long needed attention, and other vet needs were taken care of.
So far, she seems to be a really sweet, experienced mare. She is soft, willing, and loves attention/grooming. She will be evaluated under saddle for light riding. She is current with hoof and dental care, as well as vaccines and deworming.
