Birdie's Story

A couple of our volunteers found this stray female dog while they were trying to help some feral cats. She was skin and bones scavenging for food along the river next to a golf course. After bringing her to AAE and within seconds of unbundling her from her towel, much to everyone's surprise, we discovered she had milk. No doubt she had depleted her reserves before venturing away from puppies to find more nourishment. Needless to say, the volunteers returned to the golf course in search of this mama's family. Thankfully, all four of her one-week old puppies - Cinco, Bogey, Bartley, and Sandy - were found healthy and returned to mama that same day.

Birdie was scared of humans and very timid when she arrived. During their time at AAE, the little family has received all the necessary care including vet exams, vaccines, flea removal, deworming and a healthy feeding schedule. Birdie's confidence has grown tremendously, and now she greets her human friends enthusiastically, her tail going a mile-a-minute.

With a healthy, well-fed mom, the puppies have been growing steadily and gaining weight as puppies should. They are the cutest bundle of joy, and they've all been getting a ton of socialization from our volunteers.

Birdie has been a wonderful mom to her four adorable pups and her body condition has improved significantly since she arrived. She's a lovable little mama that enjoys people a ton. In the time she's been here, we've learned she prefers to potty outside, loves to be held, and likes to occasionally play with her stuffed toys before burrowing into the blankets for a nap. She's had safe exposure to many of our volunteers, seen horses, cats, and even Speedy, our tortoise from afar, and she has taken it all in with curiosity.

Birdie is spayed and microchipped and up to date with vaccines, deworming, flea, tick and heart worm medication.
