Copper's Story

Copper came to AAE in June of 2025. A NV law enforcement agency contacted AAE in May 2025 about a group of six horses that may need placement. Originally, a group of eight horses were seized by law enforcement due to neglect, and two of the horses were in such poor condition, they were euthanized. The six horses were later confiscated by the court, and ownership was transferred to the agency. While awaiting the court's decision, the horses were housed and cared for at the Nevada Department of Corrections.

When we met Copper, this lil' man's confidence had been broken, and he was very stressed!
His confidence was shaken and his stress level high. He kept his distance and resisted being haltered, at first. Eventually, he was loaded into the trailer, but wasn't a happy camper. Once his quarantine period was complete, he received full care, including dental and hoof work, vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping.  He's a kind ol' soul. He enjoys grooming and attention, he's good with the farrier, and he's simply a fun guy to work with.

This "big" ferocious dragon was really a sweet puppy dog in disguise. After a few days of settling in at AAE, Copper began to relax and gradually became more comfortable with handling and haltering. With more time to decompress, Copper has become a sweet, gentle guy who seems to understand more than the basics, and he is fairly cooperative with hoof handling.

Given a time to decompress at AAE, this guy has become a sweet and gentle ol' guy. He seems to understand the basics, and he's agreeable with hoof handling. As soon as he's done with quarantine, he'll have his much needed spa day (dental and hoof care, vaccines, deworming, and a microchip). He'll make a visit to the clinic for castration, too.  Once he's been gelded and has time to adjust to his new hormones, and he be further evaluated, then available for adoption. Stay tuned for more updates.

Copper is available for adoption. He needs an experienced person to continue his progress. For now, he's learning to enjoy pasture life with other geldings, but it's still too early to introduce mares. He's not realized he's no longer a stallion, and only time will tell if he can leave those memories behind. He's not good candidate for a boarding facility at this time. So, his perfect home should be "at home", and with another (or more) gelding. If mares were in another area, with space between, he'd likely be ok. He's around mares here, but always in separate areas. If you think you're a good match for this guy, please submit an Adoption Inquiry.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, cows, a mini donk, a mini mule, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a more quiet environment.
