Dixie's Story
AAE welcomed Dixie, a pretty young mare, from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary (DC) on Feb 28, 2018. AAE has worked with DC in a continued effort to support DreamCatcher's herd reduction efforts after the long illness and passing of their Executive Director, Barbara Clarke in November of 2016.
Dixie spent some time at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) for gentling and basic handling. She was halterable, but she has needed considerable time building trust and confidence. Dixie returned to MRILC for participation in additional courses and further development. She was introduced to ground driving and a saddle (but no rider). Dixie did quite well and is considered the "most improved" of this class. She returned a different horse.
Dixie is more confident, calm, and social than she was, but still working through trust issues and building confidence. The right home will be with a person with mustang experience; a patient person willing to commit time and consistent efforts to bring this sweet girl along. Her handling/confidence building will continue during her stay at AAE. Dixie is a confident mare in a herd environment, and she tends to be more dominant and mare-ish, so that should be considered for a future home.
Update: Dixie has been honing her ground skills, and she is learning to ground drive. She catches on quickly! Dixie is a smart mare! She's gaining much cofidence, and she is beginning to enjoy human interaction., She's still a bit weary around her hind end, and hoof trims are best with sedation, but she's improving!
Dixie is current with vaccines, deworming, and hoof and dental care, and she has a microchip in place.
