Huck's Story

Huck came to AAE with five other horses in June of 2025. A Nevada law enforcement agency contacted AAE in May 2025 about a group of six horses that may need placement. They were waiting for a judge's decision. Originally, a group of eight horses was seized by law enforcement due to neglect, and two of the horses were in such poor condition that they were euthanized. Eventually, the court's decision resulted in a transfer of ownership to the law enforcement agency. While awaiting the court's decision, the horses were housed and cared for at the Nevada Department of Corrections. While in their care, the horses were well fed, and we were told they gained weight and looked much better than when initially seized nearly three months prior.

When we met Huck, this handsome guy was fairly friendly, but uncertain whether he could trust humans. You could tell he was stressed, but he still wanted to trust. Initially, he evaded attempts to befriend and halter him. Eventually, he was willingly haltered, and he was loaded onto the trailer, leading the way.

At intake, Huck’s hooves were also in very poor condition, and his eyes were weepy and irritated, all showing he had gone without consistent care. After some time to settle in, his personality has continued to shine through. Huck has become increasingly sweet and is proving to be a gentle, easygoing horse who understands the basics and is agreeable with hoof handling. He has moments of insecurty and anxiety, but they're becoming fewer and farther between. It seems to be occasional separation anxiety when moving away from his herd, but it's slowly resolving.

Huck has come a long way. He's working on his confidence, and he's going to make a great partner for an experienced person willing to build a relationship, be a leader, and continue his progress. Huck is available for adoption. ​

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE, including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, and weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, cows, a mini donkey, a mini mule, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife, including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyotes, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high-speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a quieter environment.
