Lacey's Story

Lacey came to AAE with six other horses. Their elderly owners, one bedridden, were doing the best they could under the circumstances.

Lacey is a big, beautiful gal; a 30-year old BLM mare. On arrival, this poor girl had a deep laceration in her jaw/neck area, her hooves were really bad, and she had deep thrush. She walked very gingerly. Thankfully, she was easy to halter and relatively good with her hooves. She was able to have an early trim before her spa day when she got her dental, vaccines, and microchip. She was dewormed, too. Lacey was started on a daily Equioxx, too, to help with arthritis.

Lacey's a sweet and mild-mannered mare. Knowing she likely started her life as a free-roaming mustang, and her life nearly ended in a tiny cell for no good reason is gut-wrenching. The fact that she's still kind and unconditional with humans is unbelievable. She's old, and she's feeling her age, but she's a beautiful gem. Her poor hooves have taken time to unravel. She was most comfortable in Soft Ride boots, but she got rub sores. For now, she has shoes on her fronts, and they seem to be helping. This special old lady would appreciate a loving home of her own where she could be spoiled until her last moment of life. She deserves the best. Lacey is current with dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming, and she has a microchip. In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE, including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, and weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, cows, a mini donkey, a mini mule, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife, including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyotes, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high-speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a quieter environment.
