Luther's Story

Luther came to AAE with six other horses after law enforcement intervention. Their elderly owners, one bedridden, were not providing adequate care. Luther was a stallion, he was thin, and his hooves had not been trimmed for an extended period. Between long hooves and thickened soft tissue in his left front, he was uncomfortable walking. The thickening appears to be an old injury.

Luther was not a social guy, and he was not cooperative with hoof handling. He took time to accept a halter and interaction, but progressed fairly quickly with consistent handling and TLC. He was gelded, then had hoof and dental care, vaccines, and got a microchip.

Luther's now enjoying humans, grooming, and interaction. He's improving consistently with hoof handling and the farrier. We'll learn more about Luther's handling and movement as he settles into his "new feet", and his comfort levels improve after long neglected hooves. He's getting more frequent hoof adjustments to maintain balance and comfort. Luther will be available for adoption once his health/weight have normalized and he's moving comfortably. He is up to date with dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming, and he has a microchip.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE, including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, and weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, cows, a mini donkey, a mini mule, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife, including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyotes, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high-speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a quieter environment.
