Marshall's Story

Marshall arrived with Dillon at AAE in early February 2026 and is a mid-teens Shire gelding. The two gentle giants were left behind at a boarding facility after their owner moved cross country to the east coast and left them behind. One of our volunteers got a call from another rescue she used to volunteer with because they were unable to help. The plan was to move them, but they were left for at the boarding facility, unsupported. They made the journey up from sunny Southern California, only to be met with rain and snow.

Marshall is more reserved and less confident. They both need some TLC and lots of handling to assure them that humans aren't so bad. We're confident he'll come around to enjoy interaction and live up to the gentle giant reputation. We can't wait!

Marshall and Dillon will stay as residents in sanctuary at AAE, and will not be available for adoption. Marshall needs some TLC and lots of handling to assure him that humans aren't so bad. We're confident he'll come around to enjoy interaction and live up to the gentle giant reputation alongside Dillon.
Marshall will soon have dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming and a microchip.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, a pig, cows, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a more quiet environment.
