Norah's Injuries

Norah arrived with a couple of old, unhealed injuries, and about a month after arrival, she mysteriously injured her upper jaw.

Old Injuries on left hind

Norah had two old injuries on her hind right leg when she arrived. The ugly one mid-cannon bone wound responded well to treatment and bandaging, and it has healed. Unfortunately, the mass over her heel bulb has grown and doesn't respond well to a bandage. Docs suspect it is proud flesh (granulation tissue) or a sarcoid. The mass needs to be removed, but this is a difficult place for healing due to all of the movement in the joint area. Now that Noah has been weaned and flies are less a problem, Norah be going in for her surgery after the holidays. It seems to be a bit quiet for now, so hopefully it stays that way.

Jaw Injury

Norah was barely settling in when she fractured her jaw and nearly lost some teeth. This resulted in a visit to Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center, excellent treatment by Dr. Errico, and wire in her mouth for several months to stabilize her jaw for healing. Fortunately, there was no permanent damage, and she is healing well.

We are unsure what happened, but it seems like she caught her tooth on something.  During feeding, we noticed a tad bit of pink (blood) around her mouth and on her leg. Once we figured it out, the sight of the injury was a bit scary. How would she eat?  Silly question, somehow, she was eating at that moment. We hauled her in to Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center, with Noah in tow, too. Noah clung to her side while Dr. Errico worked wonders in mom's mouth, cleaning up the wound and wiring the fractured parts of her jaw together. When he was done, Dr. E placed some wax-like material over the wire to cover the sharp edges to protect her lips, tongue, and cheeks, then it was up to her to heal. Six months later, the wire was removed, and Norah looked almost as good as new.

This happened before we could get her scheduled for her dental. She had to wait because the speculum could have reinjured her jaw. It's absolutely incredible how well this healed, and more amazing that she didn't lose any teeth!
