Pancho's Story

Pancho came to AAE with another horse, his ol' buddy, Music, after being picked up by law enforcement. Pancho is a ~20 year old pony gelding. The two pals were found wandering the streets while their owner was in the hospital. They were both in poor condition, and they were surrendered by their owner. They had a long history of visits by law enforcement (years and years), and they had each endured more than any horse ever should. We were asked to help with Music and Pancho.

Sadly, Music was very sick; he had advanced liver disease, and though we tried to help him, he continued to decline. We helped him across the Rainbow Bridge. For 11 days, he was loved and cared for and about. Pancho arrived in better condition than
Music, yet still showed signs of long-term neglect. He was a tad thin, his hooves long and slippered, and no doubt, his teeth needed help, too. Poor guy was fearful of humans, and he struggled terribly with trust. Regardless of his condition and fears, this adorable little man stuck by Music’s side through it all. Pancho will need some extra efforts with his hoof rehab along with plenty of time to build trust with us two-leggers.

Shortly after arrival, Pancho got dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming. He got a microchip, too. He's halterable in a small space, and he leads, slowly. His feet are looking much better after a second trim, but he's not pain-free, yet. It will take a bit of time to recover from years of neglect. Thankfully, he's on the right track now. He has some new companions closer to his size, and he's making progress, slowly but surely. We have nothing but time to earn his trust!

Stay tuned for more updates. Pancho will be available for adoption once his comfort level has improved, and he's more trusting with humans.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, goats, a pig, cows, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a more quiet environment.
