Roxanna's Story

AAE was contacted by family when Roxanna's elderly owner was unable to come home after injuring herself in a fall. We were told Roxanna was an Arabian mare about 28 years old. Roxanna's family lived outside of the US, and a neighbor had been helping with her feed for several months. Family was also concerned about Roxanna's age and being alone in snowy winter conditions. Roxanna was facing euthanasia if a home couldn't be found. Roxanna hadn't had much care the past couple years due to owner's other health issues, and she hadn't had vet or farrier care for quite a while, either. It was quite a journey getting to Roxanna and hauling her back to AAE through a very narrow, windy, mountainside lane, but she loaded and traveled like a champ.

When we met Roxanna, she was thin, and her hooves long. We packed the last of her food, a few fly masks, and her blankets/sheets. On the drive back, we got an email that a former owner had been found. By the time we got back down the mountain and got Roxanna settled in a stall, it was too late to call. The next day, we connected, and Roxanna's past person wanted to give her the best final chapter since she had given her so much joy years before. Her person, Rebecca, had leased her and they competed in endurance. They had a special connection, and she wanted to give back to her now, since she couldn't have her before.

Due to Roxanna's age and change so often being difficult for older horses, we thought it would be good for Roxanna to have a familiar person with all of this change, and making the move sooner than later would be better, rather than her settling in at AAE and moving yet again.  Rebecca agreed to take on her care needs once her condition improved.

Sadly, Roxanna weighed in at a mere 657 pounds. That's not a lot for a 15.0 + horse.  She was finicky about food, and needed dental work, so we gave her a full buffet of senior pelleted options (soaked, of course), along with a little chopped hay. She picked, sniffed, and tasted here and there, and didn't really dig in to food for a couple days. The day before leaving, she ate most of her buffet!
Before heading out, Roxanna had her hooves trimmed, so she could ride in bit more comfort.

We took Roxanna home about five days from arrival. Another hour and a half drive, she was home. but she did it like she'd done it a million times. Roxanna and Rebecca were reunited after 15 years. Rebecca was so happy to see Roxanna, but so sad to see her condition. There's no doubt these two will enjoying some special time together, and Roxanna will be shining soon! Reunited and it feels so good!
