Shelby is a flashy, well-built QH-type mare that came to AAE in April of 2017 when her new owners realized they did not know enough about horses to provide proper care. They took her in after she had been abandoned in their neighborhood.  When we arrived to pick her up, it took about 2.5 hours to earn her trust and place a halter on her. She was fearful and reactive, and acted as if she'd been mishandled.

Since arriving at AAE, Shelby has learned to trust and appreciate human interaction. She is a sweet, sensitive and social mare that enjoys attention and grooming. Her previous training is unknown; however, we do not believe she has been ridden before based upon certain reactions.

She is currently living with a foster and is coming along nicely. There, Shelby gets along well with the herd and has become comfortable in a barn environment. Observations from her foster mom: Shelby has gained a lot of confidence with new situations. She looks to her person for assurance and is generally willing to trust and follow her handler. She still has occasional moments of anxiety, but those are becoming fewer and further between. She is not a spooky horse but has a busy mind, so the key with this mare is to get and keep her focus.
She is always thinking and tries hard to understand what is being asked. A slow, calm approach to new things has worked well, and not letting her emotions escalate. Once she gets over any initial anxiety, she is good to go. She learned her groundwork quickly and has been saddled successfully. We are working on consistent forward movement and plan to soon graduate to ground driving. Shelby is a special mare that will take her owner far!

Shelby is looking for an experienced adopter who can further her training with consistency and clarity. Because she tends to take her energy from her handler, her trainer should be calm, patient and willing to take as much time as it takes to develop her confidence as she learns new things. If this is you, make an appointment to meet her today!
