Wyatt's Story

Wyatt is a mighty handsome 20-ish mellow and willing gelding. Wyatt and his pal, Ruger, were stallions that came from a nearby law enforcement agency, part of a group of about 12 horses that had been seized. Over time, all but the two stallions were adopted. They had been waiting for their chance at a new home for quite a while. They each had chronic leg wounds that began treatment when they got to the shelter, and they had healed by the time they landed at AAE. Both were a little hesitant with humans when they were seized, but with care and handling, they were coming around. Wyatt and Ruger were gelded the day before we picked them up on the path to brighter futures.

Wyatt has spent time learning basic ground work, lunging, and long-lining. He’s been introduced to a saddle, and he has half a dozen rides at the walk in the round pen. When he was initially saddled, he had a couple of big bucking episodes, but hasn’t since. He has done very well, and he’s making good progress. He has an occasional opinionated moment, but he recovers from it quite reasonably. Wyatt walks confidently over a tarp, but he’s still a bit nervous with the flag. He handles all four feet well, and he’s good with the farrier. He does well with fly spray and water; though he is still a little bit protective of his back end. Overall, he has been a very cool, calm and collected guy, and he’s growing a lot more confidence with time. He’s kind and willing, but needs time to process. Kindness and patience gets you further with this guy.

Wyatt is ready to find an experienced adopter who can be a solid leader and help him continue his growth. Wyatt was is not a good candidate for a boarding facility at this time. Though he has been introduced to a herd environment with other geldings at AAE, he still has some studly/ dominant behavior with select geldings. His new home should have separate housing areas so he can have a slow/transitional introduction to another horse(s), preferably an easy going gelding. So, his perfect home should be "at home", where he can thrive with other geldings and plenty of space to enjoy his well-earned second chance.

Wyatt is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines, and deworming, and he has a microchip. Wyatt is not suitable as a beginner horse, and his perfect person will be an experienced, confident leader; someone that knows how to build confidence and continue developing his skills. Reminder, he was a stallion not too long ago, and though he’s come a long way, he’s still learning to be a good “citizen”.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, weekly farrier visits. There are resident dogs, cats, goats, a pig, cows, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas. A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Some do well; others will do better in a more quiet environment.
