About Us
AAE was founded in 2009 by a couple of individuals who were heartbroken to see large numbers of horses being neglected or abandoned due in part to the economic downturn experienced by much of the country and Northern California in particular.
Wanting to make a difference, they determined to do all they could with what resources they could muster. They worked to turn a small family-owned ranchette into a working horse facility, and in June 2009, the concept of the rescue became a reality when the first two slaughter-bound mare/foal pairs were brought in from a foreign-owned slaughterhouse feedlot in Nevada. Since that day, more than 85 horses have found their way through AAE's barn doors and are living healthy, happy, productive lives through the heroic efforts of our volunteers and the financial contributions of our donors. Thank you to all who have made the dream of saving these beautiful animals possible!

MORE ABOUT OUR FACILITY
Our main facility is located in El Dorado Hills, California, on the Digiorno family ranchette, a 14.3 acre property with a 7-stall barn with a hay/storage room, a 4-stall mare motel, a round pen, an outdoor arena and a large pasture area with a seasonal creek. In addition to the horses, there are resident goats, sheep, alpacas, turkeys, chickens, cats and dogs, including two Bouvier Des Flandres (one a Westminster Best of Breed/Group II Winner) and a Golden Retriever named Holli.
