Sage's Story

Sage came to AAE in mid-March 2024 after AAE was contacted by a nearby law enforcement agency for foster and medical assistance for three horses from a stray/abandonment situation.  These poor girls were not claimed by their owner, but maybe that was a good thing. The three fosters were transferred to AAE. Sage was halterable and loaded without issue when picked her up.

After arriving at AAE, we discovered
Sage had a nail in her hoof. Radiographs of her hoof indicated the nail did not penetrate any important structures, and the nail was removed, hoof treated, and no significant damage was identified. She's recovered without issue.

Sage had her spa day (dental and hoof care, vaccines and deworming, and she got a microchip). Sage is a very sweet, mild mannered, and very easy-going mare. She enjoys grooming and interaction, she's easy to halter/lead, and handle hooves, though she's not entirely confident with the farrier. We're exploring Sage's skills under saddle, we have only a few short, easy rides. So far, she's a very easy-going ride. She's mild-mannered and not super responsive, but very willing.

Sage is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines, and deworming, and she has a microchip.

Sage found her person, an AAE volunteer, and she's been adopted with her friend, Elvie! We're so excited for these two!

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including vehicle and foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, tractor and trailering, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, a cat, goats, cows, and mini mule, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, and bobcats in and around paddock/pasture areas.  A portion of AAE is situated along a highway with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment. Somed do well; others will do better in a more quiet environment.
