Austin's Story

Austin came to AAE  with his mom, Tegan, from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary in April 2018.  Austin was only a couple weeks old.  AAE has been supporting DreamCatcher's herd reduction efforts since April of 2017 after the long illness and passing of their Executive Director, Barbara Clarke, in November of 2016.

Austin was a shy, but curious little guy, and he had not been handled much, if at all. Austin was timid and reactive, but he's gaining confidence and composure with his huge heart and a ton of try. He is very active, playful, and super athletic.  He loves to play with the big boys in the herd, and he explores all of the pasture with the big guys and the lil' ones, too.  He has enjoyed a pasture environment with the herd.  With a slow approach, he is halterable, leads well, enjoys grooming, and stands fairly quiet with his hooves once he understands handler or farrier is not a threat. This lil guy will progress better once he's out of a herd environment and gets consistent daily handling with an experienced handler, though he's gaining confidence every day.
His new person will be experienced raising a young horse.

Training/Experience Notes:  Austin is growing into a really nice, playful and athletic guy.  He is a handsome and well built lil' machine!  Austin has a great curiosity, with a healthy bit of sensitivity.   He appreciates a slow introduction to new things.  Austin is willing and will try just about anything if you use a slow approach (don't rush him!).  Austin's been learning the basics of groundwork, he has been introduced to a surcingle, and he's coming along very nicely.  Austin is good with hoof handling, but needs a farrier that's not in a hurry.  He loads in a trailer, and he is also learning patience while being tied.  Austin is looking for an experienced partner to grow with and lead him into his fabulous looking future.

AAE has an active environment with daily volunteer activity, dogs, chickens, tractors, a nearby roadway, neighbors with gardeners and noisy gardening equipment, and more.  It seems there's always something going on, so the horses get much exposure.  The horses with no special needs live in a herd environment; while the older and special needs horses typically live in a stall/paddock environment.

Austin is current with hoof care, vaccines and deworming, and he has a microchip in place.
