Cody's Story

Cody came to AAE on January 5, 2020 after the long-term illness of his owner and the passing of his caretaker.  Family sent a photo (below) of him standing in a pasture with another horse. We were told Cody was a racehorse in his youth; however, after an injury, he lived life as a pasture pet/companion and was never trained.  Later, we were told he wasn't fast enough for the track and never raced, and after adoption, we learned he had extensive training under saddle.

Upon intake, Cody was emaciated and much in need of dental care. It was obvious Cody was unable to process hay, so he was introduced to a pellet diet immediately.  He was fed small frequent meals (alfalfa pellets), consistent with UCD's recommended program for refeeding emaciated horses.  Once appropriate, Cody's dental was done, hooves trimmed, vaccines updated, he was dewormed, and he got a microchip.  He regained weight well, and as he was getting closer to maintenance, his evaluation progressed.

Cody is a sweet, youthful ol' guy with a ton of energy, and he's always on the move (typical Arabian).  He was initially pushy and forward in hand, but with some reminders and boundaries, he softened and became more respectful on the ground.
He enjoys people, and he loves grooming and attention. Cody was restarted under saddle, and he seemed to have much more knowledge/experience than a long-time companion/pasture horse that was started for the track, but never ran.  However, the COVID-19 situation delayed progress.  Cody has shown continued progress, he appear sound and ready, willing, and able to GO.

He has been ridden less than ten times.  He is quiet at the walk, trot and canter. He seems to know how to move off the leg, and seems to be generally calm, quiet, and easy. He could be a fun restart project for someone.  His evaluation has been limited to arena rides, and we have no history of any trail riding exposure.  Cody is available for adoption, looking for an experienced rider.  He is not suitable for a beginner.

Cody is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines and deworming, and he has a microchip in place.

Cody found his forever person, and he was adopted as a light riding horse and companion to two other horses.
