Frankie's Story

Frankie came to AAE after a family distress situation, and her owner was unable to care for her.  We were told she had been a riding horse, and she was a sound, healthy, wonderful horse.

After arriving at AAE, we discovered an undisclosed lameness. Xrays showed an old fracture of her extensor process. She also has navicular issues in both fronts.  We are working to make her comfortable with joint injections, therapeutic shoeing, and other therapeutics.  So far, we're not having tremendous luck.  We're continuing to work to make life better for this sweet girl.  She is comfortable at the walk, but when asked to move out, she has intermittent periods of pain, some days worse than others.  On occasion, we find her running, bucking and playful, but not often.

Frankie loves attention, and she'll stand for hours for grooming or simply to enjoy the presence of a person.  When handled, she's usually very mild-mannered, easy-going, and respectable; however, when housed with other horses (or adjacent to other horses), she's mare-ish, especially when food is in the equation.  She will charge at and kick at other horses, sometimes with intent, sometimes just a warning.

Frankie has potential to be a nice lead-line horse for small children (e.g. grandkid visits)

Frankie is current with dental and hoof care, vaccines and deworming, and she has a microchip.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, chickens, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys and squirrels in and around paddock/pasture areas.  AAE is situated on the corner of a busy road with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Neighbors have weekly gardeners that utilize various power tools, and children that are active in yards adjacent to some stall/paddock areas.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment.
