Horse Name's Story

Hope was surrendered to AAE in February 2020.  She had a bulging eye, and we were told the eye had been in this condition for more than a year and a half.   She also has a large cluster of melanomas around her anus, under/in her tail and in the corners of her mouth (labial commissures).  Hope was in a herd of 11, and she was bottom of the herd.  She was a bit emaciated and obviously struggling.  She was pushed off food while we were observing the herd, and she meandered with limited vision.  Hope was picked up and transported immediately (on a Sunday afternoon) to Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of her eye.  She was given pain meds to provide some comfort, and her eye was evaluated.  It was non-visual, and she was scheduled for removal of the eye (enucleation) the following day.  The melanomas were not ruptured or otherwise causing obvious issue.  During removal, a melanoma was discovered behind the eye, pushing the eye outward.   A portion of the melanoma removed; however, it infiltrated the muscles and nerves.  Due to the nature of melanomas (sometimes slow growing with possibility of staying quiet), Dr. Errico felt Hope had a chance for a reasonable quality of life.  The melanoma could also progress quickly, and we could be faced with a euthanasia decision sooner than later.  The other melanomas may also become problematic at some point in her future, but for now, they are not causing significant issues.  We choose the optimistic view for Hope; she deserves a comfortable rest of her life however long that might be.

Hope is recovering and doing well.  She's on a refeeding program, and once stable, she will have her teeth floated, hooves trimmed, vaccines updated, deworming, and a microchip will be placed.

Hope will be available for adoption once her eye has healed and all of her health care needs have been updated.
