Luke's Story
Luke came to AAE as a yearling colt in June 2015. He was extremely untrusting and reactive when he arrived. Through a long, slow trust-building process, his confidence grew, and he began to accept humans. He enjoyed grooming, and attention, and he was very curious, social. He transformed from an unhandled, frightened young colt to a much softer and friendly gelding. He was gelded, and learned basic groundwork. He was adopted in 2017, and returned to AAE in March 2020 due to behavioral issues. After an early backing incident, he lost confidence and became very defensive. He spooked and managed to unseat his rider causing an knee injury to his rider.
Since arriving back at AAE in March 2020, we have seen tremendous improvement in his behavior and attitude in a very short amount of time. He is regaining his confidence, and he has been reintroduced to a saddle. He accepted without much concern. He's doing very well, but he needs more time and trust-building to continue to grow his confidence before introducing a rider. He can be caught in the big pasture, and he is mid- to low-level in the herd hierarchy. Luke can be saddled, and has a nice easy going temperament. He tries to please and has a nice focus on his handler. He has worn the cart harness and can be ground driven around the ranch! He has also been introduced to dragging a tire. He ties quietly, and he loads into the trailer like a pro! Luke has been backed quietly at the walk here and was very relaxed. With the right person, he has potential to become a lovely little riding or cart pony.
Luke is looking for an adopter with Mustang experience, a person that understands Mustangs, their need for a trusting relationship, and a willingness to take as long as it takes.
Luke is up to date with dental and hoof care, vaccines, and deworming, and he has a micro-chip. Luke has a scar from an old injury (prior to arriving at AAE) over his right ribcage. It appears he may have been bitten by a large cat or impaled by something. The scar does not appear to bother him or cause issue, and our vet has checked a couple times with no significant findings.
In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, weekly farrier visits. There are resident dogs, cats, chickens, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys and squirrels in and around paddock/pasture areas. AAE is situated on the corner of a busy road with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens. Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay. Neighbors have weekly gardeners that utilize various power tools, and children that are active in yards adjacent to some stall/paddock areas. Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment.
