Sandy's Story

Sandy came to AAE in late May 2020 when her owner was experiencing a health issue and it was becoming difficult physically to care for her.  Sandy was adopted from BLM in 2013 when she was about three.  She lived with a small herd of livestock including a llama and goats.  Sandy was handled more frequently as a youngster, and regressed a bit over the years.

Sandy is a curious, friendly, and beautiful girl, but definitely opinionated with a strong mind of her own. She is learning to soften and be respectful of personal space. She can be haltered and groomed, but isn't easy to catch in a large space - she sometimes retreats when she sees a rope. This is improving; however, when attempting to do something she's unwilling to do (e.g. oral meds, injections, etc.), she can be extremely difficult. Her favorite trick is to squeeze (aka, squish) you against a wall or rail, and she means business.

Sandy is good with hoof handling for basic cleaning, but we've used sedation for the farrier to be safe. As noted above, Sandy can be very opinionated when pushed too far, and she is incredibly strong. She's strong and knows how to use her weight. Does "bulldozer" sound familiar? That being said, she'll stand for hours to enjoy grooming and general interaction, and when you want to leave, she'll follow you as long/far as you'll let her. She has a very sweet side.

Sandy is very bonded with our other donk, Mabel. Sandy and Mabel are available for adoption, and they are looking for an experienced burro/donkey home, together.

Sandy's is current with dental and hoof care, vaccines and deworming, and she has a microchip.

In general, there is a lot of activity around AAE including foot traffic in and out of paddock/pasture areas, mucking with wheelbarrows, grooming and care activities, weekly farrier visits.  There are resident dogs, cats, chickens, and mini horses, as well as various wildlife including frequent turkeys and squirrels in and around paddock/pasture areas.  AAE is situated on the corner of a busy road with high speed vehicles, trucks, and sirens.  Tractors are used in and around pasture/paddock areas, trucks deliver feed, and a squeeze is occasionally used for unloading hay.  Neighbors have weekly gardeners that utilize various power tools, and children that are active in yards adjacent to some stall/paddock areas.  Horses at AAE are accustomed to a more active environment as opposed to a quiet/sterile environment.
