Shay's Story

Shay came to AAE with six other equine (Jake, Brantley, Lady Rose, Sammy, Conway, and Twitty) after the passing of his elderly owner.  Due to owner's health conditions and physical limitations, this herd had not received adequate care for quite some time.  Shay was laminitic, here eyes were irritated.  She was uncomfortable, and she seemed very depressed.  She was low girl on the totem pole.  She  was very bonded with Brantley (a gelding that she came in with) to their detriment.  Due to different dietary needs and their separation anxiety, they were housed independently, and both became much more manageable.

Shortly after arrival, Shay's eyes were evaluated, and she got much needed hoof and dental care.  Her right showed signs of past trauma that was quite severe, and she has a small scar on the surface.  Radiographs of her front hooves showed mild rotation and changes to tips of her coffin bones.  She was good with injections and oral meds (tube/paste administration).

Training/Experience Update: Shay is a very friendly, kind and easy-going mare. She enjoys grooming and attention.  After arrival, she was attached to her buddy and called and paced if he was taken away, but he seemed to remain more calm and relaxed when he was taken out/away for handling.  She has been relatively easy to handle on the ground since separation.  Shay has been good with the farrier, and she did not have any issues with loading/transport.  She is living in a stall/paddock environment due to her past laminitis/founder and dietary restrictions.  Shay is turned out in a large paddock with a small herd (four) of senior pals.

AAE has an active environment with daily volunteer activity, dogs, chickens, tractors, a nearby roadway, neighbors with gardeners and noisy gardening equipment, and more.  It seems there's always something going on, so the horses get much exposure.  The horses with no special needs live in a herd environment; while the older and special needs horses typically live in a stall/paddock environment.

Shay is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines and deworming, and she has a microchip in place.  Shay is looking for a companion only home with a dry lot or limited turnout in green grass areas due to history with laminitis/founder..
